As you might have seen last week, I decided to join on the One Room Challenge this fall. You can read more about it in this post, but I’m working on the guest bedroom in our home. This week, I was able to finish the wall treatment. I opted to but board and batten on the bottom two-thirds of the walls to add some texture. Board and batten was first used on home exteriors, but has become rather popular in interiors.
In order to make the wall treatment, I used the following supplies:
• 1×2 Primed MDF for vertical boards and ledge
• 1×3 Primed MDF for top horizontal boards
• 1×4 Primed MDF for baseboards as well as door and window trim
• Painter’s tape with plastic
• Wood filler
• Caulk
• Paint (Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore)
I also used the following tools:
• Finish Nail Gun
• Orbital and Mouse Sanders
• Paint Sprayer
To oversimplify what I did, and because there are many tutorials that are more detailed than I can ever get, here are the basic steps I followed:
1. Replace the existing trim with 1x4s.
2. Install horizontal 1×3 board parallel to the ceiling for visual consistency. Because I was already measuring, I added the 1×2 ledges on the top as well.
3. Measure and install vertical boards.
4. Use wood filler wherever boards meet. Sand. Repeat.
5. Use caulk to hide seams.
6. Paint.
Changing out the trim in the room isn’t necessary to create a board and batten look, but I didn’t like the trim that was in there and used this as an opportunity to change it. Click through the slideshows below to see some before and afters:
I AM LOVING IT! Seriously, I can’t wait to keep working on this room! Eeeeeee. Love, Shauna
