Hello friends! I’ve had a lot of little projects going on here, and I’m excited to share some updates with you. Day by day, the guest bedroom continues to evolve and I love they way it’s turning out even more than I knew I could. To see how far it’s come, be sure to take a look at posts from week one, two, three, and four of this One Room Challenge.
Last week, the big change was adding paint to the walls and ceiling. That changed the room pretty dramatically and gave the bedroom the look that I’ve been wanting to give it since we moved in a year ago. With that done, I’ve been able to focus on all those little things to finish the space off, starting with the stools I’ve been mentioning for weeks!
If you remember from my inspiration board in the first post, you might have seen that my vision includes adding two stools under the table in the room. I fell in love with some stools from CB2 a long time ago, but wasn’t as keen on the $250 a piece price tag. So, being the stubborn person that I am, I decided that I could make them for less—after all, I wanted a different fabric than cow hide on the seat anyway! So, this weekend, I got my butt in gear and cranked away on them. I have had all the wood I needed for the project for a while, I just had to “get cracking” as they say on my new Netflix obsession, The Great Interior Design Challenge. Anyone else bingeing that??
For anyone interested in building and creating things out of wood, but you’re not sure where to start with tools and supplies, I can not think more highly of the Kreg Jig with a cordless drill. This tool gives me the ability to make a lot of things with a simple setup! Even the most basic Kreg Jig allows you to make pocket holes. And if you can splurge for this clamp, I recommend it as well. So, this tool basically allowed me to make the stools that I so desired after a Saturday of slowly figuring it all out. I only made one mistake, but that was a measure once, cut once mess up… So, the stools have been cut, assembled, stained, and just had the fabric attached to them. All that’s left is filling in the screw holes and adding some bronze circles to the ends of the dowels that I just decided I wanted to add at the last minute. ?
Some new purchases have been put in the bedroom this week as well including a mirror, a faux tree, and a lamp. The mirror came from Amazon and is 37 inches in diameter!!! I’m so happy it arrived in one piece! Hahah. I didn’t want to pay the $150 for it so for the past few weeks I’ve been patiently waiting to see if there were any “new and used” ones being sold for less and finally scored one for $107! It wasn’t even from a third-party seller, it was an Amazon Warehouse sale which means it was probably returned by someone else but that nothing is wrong with it. And even if there was something wrong with it, it would be easy to return since I would be dealing directly with Amazon. It is a monstrous mirror and I. Love. It.
When Target released their new Opalhouse line a couple of weeks ago, I heard that the faux fiddle leaf fig tree was good. So, since I was planning on getting a tree for this room, I thought it was the perfect timing to try that one out! That way, I could also buy myself a little more time to find my green thumb… With the faux, I also grabbed a nice basket to put it in because the pot on the base of the plant is comically small. I can tell you that every time I walk it of my bedroom and get a glimpse of that green down the hall, it makes me light up. So good.
Lastly, I added a subtle pink lamp to the console table opposite the bed. Both sides of the bed will be getting reading lights, but without overhead lighting, I wanted to add more to this room and without much any spare floor space, a table lamp was the clear way to go. The blush color matches the barely pink accent pillow on the bed as well as some other pops of pink that I’m planning on adding to the room which I think will be nice with the black ceiling and deep greens of the Iceland print that will be hung on the wall.
Speaking of which, I’ve been working on building a frame for the print! Everyone seemed to lean towards one of the to prints in the last post, which is also the one that I preferred. Great minds! So, I picked up some 1×2 inch common boards, cut and sanded them, and am now waiting for the wood glue to dry before I stain those the same as the stools.
There is one new guy in the photos that has been in our home for a number of years, and that is Rudy, the brass reindeer above the curtains! He’s basically the reason that I’m adding other brass accents in the room. I just love him so much!
And the last update for the week is that I changed out the doorknob and hinges to the room. All the handles in this house are brushed nickel and, though there’s nothing wrong with them, I’m looking forward to updating all the doors in the house for a little more character. I went with a dark oil rubbed bronze round knob that has a rectangular back plate. Something I don’t think I would normally pick out of a lineup, but so far, I’m loving the change!
Next week is the big reveal and I’m excited to finish this space with custom bedside tables, wall mounted reading lamps, artwork on the walls, and all the little details that make a cozy space for guests to stay. As always, be sure to check out what the featured designers of the One Room Challenge are doing here, and the other guest participants (like me!) are up to this week here. Love, Shauna
