Whenever people talk about a quick, affordable, and easy change to do in a space that makes a big impact, their first answer is usually paint. But what about the second? Curtains. Curtains immediately class up a room. Having something on the vertical plane says you’ve moved in! And usually, it’s less of a headache than finding that perfect piece of art for the wall.
After waiting way too long to make this change, I have finally switched out our curtains upstairs for the crisp white ones that have been sitting in a closet for many months. Although we put up curtain rods pretty quickly after moving in, I just put our old curtains from the Mt. House on them. The problem was that the Mt. House was definitely a warmer space, in the sense that everything was kind of beige, including the curtains. That wasn’t really the look we were going for in this space that was already filled with cool grey walls.
Alright, but I’ve had new, white, IKEA LENDA curtains in the closet for months—what gives?! Well, they needed to be hemmed. And I chose to take my time with them and sew each one. I would do one here and there, but I really cracked down on it this past weekend. The motivation came when I decided to buy these curtain clips from Target to alter the look of the curtains some more for a sleeker feel. That’s mostly true—the rest of the motivation came from Matt continuing to bang his legs on the corner of our bed as he tried to maneuver his way around the bunched up fabric on the floor from the old beige curtain that was too long for the space. Ouch!
This is so simple that it really doesn’t need a post of it’s own, but it’s also SO good that it does! I sat down, curtain in hand, cut off the tab on the top that is meant to go around the curtain rod, and clamped a curtain clip onto that spot. Voila! I didn’t alter any of the hemmed lengths because this change only shortened the curtain by about a half an inch. So, I hung them up in their prospective places and called it a day!
The true magic happened the next morning, when I got to wake up in a room flooded with a beautiful diffused white light. And I also didn’t hear Matt swear from kick the corner of the bed. Success!
Love, Shauna
