As you might have seen last week, I decided to join on the One Room Challenge this spring. You can read more about it in this post, but I’m working on finishing the guest bedroom in our home. This week, most of my updates revolve around getting some new pieces in the room.
Previously in the room, we had a lovely secretary, that hid my sewing machine perfectly, with a matching bookshelf next to it. The problem with those two items was that they stuck out into the small room a little too far, and didn’t actually provide a place for guests to put down their stuff. It was great for me because I was able to use the space for multiple purposes, but the first time we had visitors stay there, it didn’t feel right. So, first up was getting those pieces out of the room! It immediately felt more open.
In the space that held those bulkier items, I decided to replace it with a white, skinny console table from Target. The price was right and I’m loving the look! I think I might want to find or build some stools to place underneath that can do double duty as a chair or luggage rack for our guests. Also, how beautiful is that rug underneath?!? It’s an oldie from Turkmenistan that wasn’t currently being used at my folks house and I was very happy to take it off their hands for a while.
Another big change I made was to the bedding and, oh my gosh, am I so happy with it! The organic-patterned off white bedding that we’ve had for many years was switched out for a crisp, clean new look with white sheets, a white blanket, a grey and white striped duvet set, and two perfectly appropriate throw pillows (blush and white).
Lastly, there is a breath of fresh air in this room with new curtains! We were formerly using what we had extra of from our Mountain House, but that home was very beige-y. The curtains were replaced with white IKEA ones that I cut the tabs off of and attached clips to the top of before hanging. There’s slightly more information on that process here, but not too much because it really is as simple as it sounds! There are two panels on each side of the window to add some luxury.
I’m loving the way it’s looking already, but I have so much more that I want to do! Next week, hopefully, there will be some new furniture in here to show off. I’m also looking forward to painting the walls. As good as the neutral grey in here is, the whole house was painted with a glossier finish than I would have picked, so I’m taking the opportunity to change-up the tone as well—keeping it bright, but making it warmer and more inviting. Stay tuned! And again, be sure to check out what the featured designers of the One Room Challenge are doing here, and the other guest participants (like me!) are up to this week here. Love, Shauna
