Remember those sconces I bought and talked about changing out? Well, it happened! After a little snafu that resulted in the sconces being shipped to our old address, they were delivered to our house, and then promptly sat in the basement for a while. After all, replacing sconces sounds like electrical work to me, and electrical work scares me (rightly so, I think!). I was hoping that my dad could help me out when he came to visit next…
Since we had two sconces, I asked for my dad to show me how to do the first one and then let me do the second one. The thought of exposed wires is what really gets to me, but it turns out, it wasn’t so bad. We made sure the light switch was off before we started working on them, but if there was a chance of someone flipping the switch while we were working, we could have also just turned off the breaker. Then we unscrewed the glass from the wall, followed by the pan before disconnecting all the wires and reconnecting them to the new fixture at the appropriate places. I was impressed that the sconce from West Elm came with new wire connectors and the wire ends were already stripped, ready to go. That meant that everything going back into the wall was new and meant to go together, which I appreciated after pulling a modge podge of things off the wall with the old sconces.
We got both sconces on the wall and flipped the switch! Dad’s worked, but mine didn’t… As my sadness began to sink in, dad suggested changing the bulb, and then it worked! It really was as simple as I thought! So, a little bit of work, and these new lights just make me glow. It’s the first real permanent fixture that we’ve changed inside the house and there are not enough words to describe how much I love them. I can’t wait to get my hands on some other stuff! Love, Shauna
