It should come as no surprise that after living in this house for the better part of a year, but we have bedroom furniture! Our guest bedroom at the Mt. House was doing triple duty as a tv room, an office, and a guest space, so having a dedicated guest room in the townhouse is so wonderful. The fact that people can (and do!) drop in and ask to stay the night and that I don’t have to do anything to prepare somewhere for them to sleep is just the best. So, in order to set that up, the very least we needed was a bed.

After seeing these inspiration photos above for a nice looking guest room, I just loved the way the bed looked with the Christmas-y decorations on the end, and so cozy as a guest bed, that I had my heart set on one from eBay. After doing my due diligence trying to find a cheaper or similar option, I couldn’t—so we bought it. I assembled it once it arrived, after a little mix up that required some backtracking, but luckily, in person, the final look didn’t disappoint!
I don’t love the look of very tall beds, and I wanted to be sure to showcase as much of this bed frame as possible, so I bought a 4” tall short box spring from Walmart to put under the mattress. This guy was a little weird because it required me to fully assemble it, but I got it done. I might use a fitted sheet to rig a more cohesive cover on it eventually, but for now, it’s equipped with the very snug cover that came with it.
Next up, the mattress. Being a guest room, I obviously wanted it to be a comfortable place for visitors! And to me, that meant a comfy mattress. Mattresses are one of those things where the technology on them hasn’t improved much in many years, but the price has. I read an article that suggested a sweet spot where cost meets comfort—more than a few hundred, but less than a thousand dollars. One day, I decided to drive over to a nearby Sears Outlet just to see what they had. Turns out, they had one queen size mattress in the entire store: a Sealy brand with a pillow top that was marked down from $1200 to $400. I tried it out and decided it would do fine. I attempted to negotiate with my very pregnant sales representative, but she wasn’t having it. Oh well, I loaded it up and drove [slowly] back to the house. Once I got inside, I asked for Matt’s help unloading under the one condition that he couldn’t make fun of how I jerry-rigged that thing onto my car roof! Hahah. See, the employees were allowed to help me place the mattress on the roof of my car, but they couldn’t have any part in securing it, for liability reasons, I’m sure. The good news is that I got it home! Let’s focus on the positives.
So, here we have it, a guest room ready for a guest. *hint*hint* We’re currently using the same bedding that we had for our inflatable guest mattress that was used in the Mt. House, but we also have a king duvet from Anthropologie that I want to try in there. It didn’t work on our bed due to the heavy dog traffic, but because it’s a size bigger than the guest bed, I think it would look great draped farther down.
