Hi there! Today I’m here to share what the entry area and powder room looked like when we moved in.
I don’t think the foyer the most exciting space, but whether you come in through the front door, or come up the steps from the garage, it’s the first real room of our home that you walk in to. Like I mentioned in the floorplan post, the whole space is very monochromatic neutral, and this area is no different.
When you walk in the front door, immediately on your right is a powder room. Next to that are the stairs to go up to the bedrooms or down to the garage (behind the door), and beyond that, you can see straight all the way through the living room. On the other side is the formal dining room which we will be using as a library and somewhere between the latter two is an odd hall closet.
Because there’s an outlet between the bathroom door and the stairs, my hope is to build an entry table that we can put a lamp on top. It’s the simple things in life, but this space doesn’t need much light as it’s more of a thoroughfare than a space to hang out in. There is a light in the ceiling, but it’s pretty bright, and if you don’t know us well, then I should mention that Matt’s not a fan of what I can only describe simply as stock overhead lighting. Bright and cold light fixtures don’t really get used much in the Betz home. Also, a runner/rug/doormat would be a welcome addition in this space at some point.
When our realtor, Chris George, asked me what the top 3 items on my new home wishlist were, “more than one bathroom” was first out of my mouth. Not because I don’t like sharing spaces with Matt, obviously, but because it’s nice to have your own space that you don’t have to share with visitors. Somehow, we got a place that has two and a half bathrooms—1 master, 1 guest (both upstairs), and 1 powder room on the main floor! And that’s enough. Collecting bathrooms is not a desired hobby of mine.
So in this powder room, the first thing to address is that the lovely light-bearing window looks out directly onto the front porch—as in, someone standing on the porch, or even on a neighbor’s porch, can see into the bathroom, especially if it’s dark outside and you need to turn the light on in the bathroom to see. But who does that anyway? The goal is to get some film to put over the windows to obscure sight lines, but not sunlight (because we want to save as much natural light as we can). Aside from the window, and swapping out toilet paper holders, because I’m particular where form meets function, there’s not much going on in here. A rug might be nice. A bold wall color could be fun as well, since it’s such a small space. To be determined…
So that all for now. I’ll be back soon with more house tour soon! Love, Shauna
