Hey friends and strangers! Remember when I talked about the main and only problem with our powder room? The fact that the window looks directly out on to our front porch and our neighbors porch, and the communal walkway between many neighbors front doors? Yeah, that problem.
In our old place, when I wanted to obstruct the view out (or in) a window, I tried something that came in what looked like a spray paint can. It was really fume-y and not especially consistent in its application. Overall, not my favorite product to use, so I knew I didn’t want to go that route with this little window in the powder room. Instead, I researched some window cling from Amazon and decided to go for it. I bought this roll for reference.
Once it arrived, I got out a ruler, a cutting mat, and a cutting knife (couldn’t find my X-ACTO knife in the sea of boxes yet). I measured the window and (you see where I’m going with this, right?) cut a square the same size, or slightly smaller, out of the cling film. The instructions said to apply it to the window using water, but a coworker of mine had recommended I use Windex instead, so that’s what I did. I sprayed it liberally onto my window that I was working to cover, laid the cling onto the window, and used an expired credit card to smooth out any bubbles between the two layers. The following day, I returned to smooth out the bubbles one more time as it dried, and that was it!
Immediately after applying the cling, I was worried about how much darker the room felt, but I think it was my direct comparison to the before and after because, the room isn’t dark. Instead of sunlight shining directly in through the window, the light is being diffused, so it’s darker, but I don’t think that’s the most accurate description. Still, I wouldn’t do anything different because the last thing I want is someone visiting our house at night and to not realize that when they turn the light on in the powder room, it doesn’t matter if they close the door–they might not be alone. *shudder*
This project was so easy that I decided to continue cutting the cling to cover up the small windows next to the front door following the same method. We might not have window treatments up in the rest of the house, but at least I have a few spots where I know no one is looking through our windows as they walk past our front door.
Love, Shauna
