Our townhouse floorplan (that you can see here) included a formal dining room off the entryway and the kitchen. Since we don’t have a need for most things “formal”, we decided to use that space as a library. Next question, what do you mean by “library”? No, I’m not living in a magical Beauty and the Beast world where I have thousands of book to store, but with Matt being a graduate student, we’ve acquired a few. So, to us library means a room with some bookshelves, a place to sit and read, maybe a record player in the future. Can you visualize it? A restful room. Bonus, it’s right off the kitchen, so it provides an option for someone to sit somewhere cozy while still being able to talk to the cook.
A window treatment is necessary, for sure. We have some bookshelves to put in here along with our twin sleeper sofa and ottoman. I have a feeling that’s going to pretty much fill the space. A rug would be nice as well to soften the tile flooring. I’m feeling like some large wall art will be needed too! Any suggestions on large, cost-effective art is available, please share.
What would you do with a formal dining room in your house if you didn’t need it?
Love, Shauna
